College Selection Checklist: What to Check Before Admission

At a glance

Use this checklist for each programme and campus you are considering. You can read, copy or print it without registering. The aim is a shortlist supported by evidence, not a score based on marketing claims.

Start with researched college profiles · Explore course families

1. Confirm the exact qualification

Write down the programme name, awarding institution, campus, study mode, duration and academic session. Compare these with the offer and prospectus. A brand, franchise or training centre name is not enough.

Evidence to keep: Save the programme regulations and the official recognition or affiliation record that applies to this course.

2. Check eligibility before preferences

Match school subjects, marks, entrance papers, category documents and any programme-specific conditions. Keep examination registration, university application, counselling and reporting as separate tasks.

Evidence to keep: Record the issuing authority, deadline, required action and confirmation receipt for each stage.

3. Build a complete cost sheet

Separate tuition, compulsory charges, refundable deposits, hostel, mess, transport, materials and equipment. Record whether each number is per semester, year or complete programme. Include likely travel and living costs.

Evidence to keep: Get an official fee schedule and written cancellation/refund terms; mark any unresolved amount as unknown, not zero.

4. Inspect what you will study

Read compulsory modules and electives. Ask how frequently electives actually run, what prerequisites apply and how practical work is assessed. Compare a sample assignment and weekly timetable.

Evidence to keep: Keep a first-year syllabus and one later-year project or assessment example.

5. Examine learning facilities

Inspect the facilities for your course, including laboratories, studios, libraries, clinics or workshops where relevant. Ask about access hours, group sizes, supervision and equipment charges.

Evidence to keep: Distinguish facilities on this campus from images of another campus or a planned building.

6. Understand student support

Ask about accessibility accommodations, counselling, academic support, anti-ragging procedures and grievance contacts. Check hostel eligibility, commuting time and safety arrangements.

Evidence to keep: Record named official contact channels and the published process for requesting support.

7. Read outcomes carefully

Use programme-specific, dated data. Check graduating cohort size, number participating in recruitment, number placed and further-study outcomes. A highest package is not the typical outcome, and offers are not the same as students placed.

Evidence to keep: Save the original report and its definitions. Leave missing figures unresolved instead of inventing a comparison score.

8. Speak to students with specific questions

Ask about a typical week, teaching continuity, assessments, access to facilities and unexpected expenses. Seek several perspectives rather than treating one review as representative.

Evidence to keep: Separate personal experiences from verified policy or programme facts.

9. Check financial aid separately

Check eligibility, application dates, renewability, documents, exclusions and whether aid is guaranteed or competitive. Do not deduct an unapproved scholarship from your minimum affordable budget.

Evidence to keep: Keep the official scheme terms and application acknowledgement.

10. Decide and retain the evidence

Compare the same programme type and cost period. Identify non-negotiables, unresolved questions and an affordable backup. Read the offer before paying; use the institution’s official payment channel.

Evidence to keep: Keep copies of the offer, fee schedule, payment receipts and communications. Never rely only on a verbal assurance.
