RRB NTPC Syllabus: Mathematics, Reasoning and General Awareness

Explore the official NTPC subject areas and a practical study checklist for mathematics, reasoning and general awareness.

At a glance

The NTPC notifications organise CBT study into Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness. This guide turns the official subject lists into a usable preparation checklist. It does not assign invented chapter-wise weightage.

Mathematics topics

  • Number systems, decimals, fractions, LCM and HCF.
  • Ratio and proportion, percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest.
  • Time and work, time and distance, and mensuration.
  • Elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry and elementary statistics.

Begin with arithmetic fluency, then practise mixed questions. Keep a formula sheet and record the condition under which each formula applies. A formula remembered without knowing when to use it is not enough for a timed paper.

General Intelligence and Reasoning

The notifications include analogy, number and alphabet series, coding and decoding, mathematical operations, similarities and differences, relationships, analytical reasoning, syllogism, jumbling, Venn diagrams, puzzles, data sufficiency, statement-conclusion, courses of action, decision making, maps and graph interpretation.

Use diagrams or a consistent notation for relationship and arrangement questions. Review incorrect inferences: a statement that seems plausible is not necessarily supported by the conditions.

General Awareness

The published list spans national and international current events, sports, art and culture, literature, monuments, history and the freedom struggle, geography, polity and governance, science and technology, environment, computers, transport, the economy and public organisations. General Science and Life Science are described up to the Class 10 CBSE level.

Separate static notes from date-dependent news. Revise short topic summaries, then use questions to test whether you can distinguish similar events, institutions and terms. A predicted current-affairs month range is not an official restriction on the examination.

CBT 1 versus CBT 2 study planning

The topic families overlap, but the examination structure differs. Learn the foundation once and then practise at the pace and question volume required for the stage you are taking. Use the exam-pattern page for duration, question distribution and marking instead of assuming that the two CBTs are interchangeable.

A practical revision checklist

  • Mark each official topic as not started, learning, practising or revised.
  • Keep an error log for both concepts and avoidable mistakes.
  • Reattempt weak topics without the solution visible.
  • Use previous papers with their original year and stage labels.
  • Schedule mixed tests after topic practice to develop question selection.
