Use a book-selection checklist
Compare the contents against the official syllabus. Look for readable explanations, graded exercises, worked solutions and clearly identified editions. Inspect sample pages where available. A large question count or a claimed success rate is not evidence that the content is accurate.

Choose the correct year, session and subject. An official question paper is not automatically an answer key. Keep coaching explanations separate from UPSC-issued keys, and do not carry an old application deadline into a future study plan.
Begin with free official material
Download the current notification, syllabus and official previous papers before buying books. Identify the academy combination and topics you actually need. UPSC does not endorse a commercial “best books” list in the cited notification.
Choose by subject and baseline
For Mathematics, prioritise concept explanations where foundations are weak. For English, seek contextual practice and explained answers. For GK, use reliable reference material and maintain separate current-affairs notes. One large guide may be convenient but still require supplementation for a weak area.
Avoid redundant purchases
Finish and review a manageable set of resources before adding another book covering the same material. Keep a gap list to justify any new purchase. Price, availability and editions change, so this guide does not invent current prices or label a particular edition as the latest.
