Grammar and usage practice
Revise one weak grammar area at a time, solve a short exercise and explain why the rejected options are wrong. Revisit the topic in a mixed set later in the week. Do not rely on a memorised shortcut if the sentence meaning contradicts it.

Choose the correct year, session and subject. An official question paper is not automatically an answer key. Keep coaching explanations separate from UPSC-issued keys, and do not carry an old application deadline into a future study plan.
Start with a diagnostic paper
Attempt an official English paper under the two-hour limit, then classify mistakes as comprehension, grammar, vocabulary or rushed reading. Use the actual paper’s marking instructions to calculate a practice score. The paper is not inherently easy or high-scoring for every candidate.
Comprehension and contextual vocabulary
Read the entire relevant passage before choosing an answer. Identify what the author actually states, distinguish inference from outside knowledge and record unfamiliar words in their sentence context. Reviewing a small set of recurring errors is more useful than collecting unexplained word lists.
A repeatable weekly routine
As an adaptable editorial example, alternate focused topic practice with mixed timed sets, and reserve one session for review. Adjust the workload to your baseline and available time. Keep time for General Knowledge and, where required, Mathematics; English is one part of the written combination.
Review before attempting more papers
Track accuracy and time spent as well as total attempted questions. Use an official key when available and label coaching solutions accordingly. More attempts can lower a score when uncertain guesses create avoidable penalties.
