SSC MTS Exam Pattern: Sessions, Marks and Selection

Verified SSC MTS 2025 pattern as a preparation reference: two sessions, negative marking, qualifying thresholds and Havaldar physical tests.

At a glance

Source review: 6 October 2026. These rules are verified for the 2025 recruitment cycle. The SSC MTS notice-board category reviewed on this date showed 2025-cycle updates; a replacement 2026 or 2027 recruitment notification was not verified. An examination taking place in 2026 does not automatically become the 2026 recruitment cycle.

SSC MTS exam pattern: the reviewed 2025 scheme used two mandatory computer-based sessions on the same day. Session I was qualifying; merit was based on Session II, subject to the applicable selection rules. No new 2026–2027 scheme is certified by this page.

Questions, marks and timing

Session / subjectQuestionsMarksSession duration
I: Numerical and Mathematical Ability206045 minutes for Session I
I: Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving2060Same Session I
II: General Awareness257545 minutes for Session II
II: English Language and Comprehension2575Same Session II

Both sessions had to be attempted. Session II began immediately after Session I. The notice allowed 60 minutes per session for eligible candidates covered by its scribe provisions; ordinary duration was 45 minutes per session.

Negative marking and qualifying marks

Session I had no negative marking. Session II deducted one mark for each wrong answer. Minimum qualifying percentages in each session were UR 30%, OBC/EWS 25%, and other categories 20%. These are qualifying thresholds, not the eventual competitive cut-off.

How merit and selection worked

Session II was evaluated only after the candidate qualified Session I. Normalized Session II scores determined merit. MTS selection also depended on category, age group, State/UT and post preferences. Havaldar candidates additionally had to qualify PET/PST; the notice specified shortlisting to physical tests at a 1:7 vacancy-to-candidate ratio.

A single national expected-cut-off number cannot represent all MTS age/category/State groups. Use the relevant official result table when comparing marks.

Havaldar PET/PST

The ordinary walking standards were 1,600 metres in 15 minutes for men and 1 kilometre in 20 minutes for women. Male ordinary height was 157.5 cm with fully expanded chest 81 cm and at least 5 cm expansion; female ordinary height was 152 cm and weight 48 kg. The notice provided named-group relaxations and specific PwBD exemptions. These are historical notification standards, not an individual fitness determination.
