Latest official update — 16 October 2026
MCC has extended the 2026 stray-vacancy round. Its notice dated 14 October sets registration until 4 pm, payment until 6 pm, and choice filling until 11:55 pm on 16 October. Choice locking is scheduled from 7 pm to 11:55 pm that day, according to MCC server time. The revised result date is 19 October, with reporting from 19–26 October. These deadlines apply to the MCC route; check your eligibility for this round before proceeding.
For 2027 preparation, no application timetable was found on the NTA portal reviewed on 16 October. The examination rules below are explicitly the published 2026 baseline.

What changed during the cycle?
The original bulletin’s May timetable is not the final event timeline: the official portal subsequently published re-examination notices and a July result for the June sitting. Keep the bulletin for rules but use later notices for events. A May admit-card or answer-key page should not be presented as the current counselling action.
Notification and dates
Read the 2026 information bulletin with the July result release. For admissions, use MCC’s current UG counselling page and the relevant state counselling authority.

The stray-round dates reflect MCC’s extension notice dated 14 October, which updates the earlier counselling schedule. They concern that counselling route, not every state’s admission process. The 2027 application timetable was not available in the official sources reviewed on 16 October 2026.
Seats and counselling routes
NEET does not publish one recruitment vacancy total. Seats vary by college, course, quota and counselling round. Examine the current seat matrix for the route you intend to use. A qualifying result does not reserve a seat; registration, choices, allocation and reporting are separate steps. State-quota conditions must be checked with that state’s authority.
Eligibility
The 2026 bulletin requires the candidate to be at least 17 by 31 December of the examination year. There is no upper age limit in that bulletin. It also specifies qualifying-examination subject and category conditions. Match your Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English qualifications to the appropriate bulletin code. Do not infer admission eligibility only from being permitted to sit the test; counselling authorities verify documents and course-specific conditions.
Application fees and counselling payments
The 2026 examination fee in India was ₹1,700 General, ₹1,600 General-EWS/OBC-NCL and ₹1,000 for the specified SC/ST/PwBD/PwD/third-gender categories; the outside-India fee was ₹9,500. This is not the counselling fee. Before paying during counselling, read the separate registration and security-deposit rules, including refund, resignation and non-reporting conditions.
Exam pattern
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Physics | 45 questions, 180 marks |
| Chemistry | 45 questions, 180 marks |
| Biology | 90 questions, 360 marks |
| Total | 180 compulsory questions, 720 marks, 180 minutes |
| Mode and marking | Pen-and-paper; +4 correct, −1 incorrect, 0 unanswered |
Syllabus and preparation for a later attempt
Use the syllabus attached to the applicable official examination cycle. Organise revision by Physics, Chemistry and Biology, then divide each subject into units you can test. A useful weekly routine combines concept revision, worked questions and timed mixed practice. Record whether each error came from recall, calculation, interpretation or time pressure.
Review wrong answers before adding another mock test. Practise filling responses carefully and reserve time to check question numbers. Preparation advice is not a guarantee of marks, admission or a predicted cut-off. Reconcile your plan with the new bulletin when a later cycle is officially published.
Results, qualifying cut-offs and admission
Get the scorecard from NTA’s NEET portal. The examination qualifying cut-off and the closing rank for a particular college are different measures. College allocation also depends on quota, category, choices and available seats. Compare like-for-like counselling data rather than treating a previous closing rank as an assured future outcome.
Reporting checklist
Read the allotment letter, required original-document list and reporting schedule. Check fees and the institution’s instructions before travel. Keep copies of submitted forms, payment receipts and acknowledgements. Any upgrade or resignation decision should be based on the current round’s rules; do not assume that an earlier round’s exit conditions continue unchanged.
Study and admission resources
Use NTA’s official examination documents and MCC or the applicable state authority for admissions. Students comparing non-medical university courses can read our CUET UG guide; CUET does not replace NEET for the medical admission route. Before accepting a seat, review the college cost and admission checklist.
Compare NEET coaching options by teaching mode, batch support and total cost. Read our AIIMS New Delhi admission guide for a college-specific starting point; a coaching purchase does not secure admission.

Frequently asked questions
Is NEET a government job exam?
No. It is an entrance examination; admission does not itself confer government employment.
Does qualifying guarantee a medical seat?
No. Counselling and seat-allotment conditions apply.
Should I use the May date in the original bulletin as the final 2026 timeline?
No. Later official re-examination and result notices must be read alongside that bulletin.
