Arts & humanities: Courses, Admission Routes & College Choices

At a glance

Choose a subject you want to investigate deeply. History, literature, political science, sociology and languages build different forms of reading, evidence evaluation and writing. Compare the curriculum rather than treating every BA as the same course.

Which course route fits your interest?

Course familyWhat to investigateDecision to make
BA (Hons.) in a subjectConcentrated study of one disciplineInspect core readings, research methods and elective access.
BA programme / multidisciplinary routesA combination of subjects under university rulesCheck which combinations are actually available and how progression works.
Languages and communication routesLanguage, literature or communication, depending on the degreeDistinguish language proficiency, literary study and practical media production.

Course names are a starting point. Read the awarding university’s current programme regulations for duration, exits, entry subjects and the final qualification. Similar names do not guarantee identical curricula.

How admission works

CUET UG is used by participating universities, but subject combinations and admission rules belong to each university and programme. Check the university bulletin before selecting exam papers. Hindu College is a University of Delhi example to explore, not a promise of admission.

CUET UG and university-specific requirements

Subject choices: use the university rule, not just the test menu

The DU 2026–27 undergraduate bulletin requires CUET subjects to match subjects studied in Class XII, subject to its equivalence provisions. It also requires the programme-specific combination. This is a 2026 rule reference, not an announced 2027 eligibility policy.

Make a three-column list: the degree you want, its required test subjects and your school subjects. Resolve any mismatch before paying for an application. Compare the specific departments in the Hindu College guide rather than choosing a BA only by college name.

Try the subject before choosing it

Read two accounts of the same event or debate. Write a short argument that identifies the evidence and explains disagreement. If you enjoy this process, compare history, political science and sociology syllabuses to see which approach fits.

Questions that make a useful shortlist

  • What will I read and write in the first semester? Can I inspect a course outline?
  • How much assessment is essays, examinations, presentations or fieldwork?
  • Are the electives and language levels I want available to students on this programme?
  • What research, library, accessibility and academic-writing support can I use?

Compare the total cost

Account for reading material, fieldwork, language resources, travel and housing. Library access and digital subscriptions can materially affect the cost of study.

Study and career fit

Possible directions include research, communication, public service and further professional study, but each requires additional choices and evidence of skills. A BA does not automatically confer a teaching or legal qualification.
