Which course route fits your interest?
| Course family | What to investigate | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| BTech / BE | Engineering mathematics, branch foundations, laboratories and projects | Compare the branch curriculum and admission route at each institution. |
| BCA / computing degrees | Programming and computing applications; structure varies by university | Check mathematics requirements, practical assessment and progression options. |
| BSc in computing or science | A science-focused curriculum that can include theory and research | Read the exact syllabus; it is not interchangeable with an engineering degree. |
Course names are a starting point. Read the awarding university’s current programme regulations for duration, exits, entry subjects and the final qualification. Similar names do not guarantee identical curricula.
How admission works
For many engineering applicants, JEE Main is one admission route. For the regular JEE-based IIT BTech route, candidates need JEE Advanced and the applicable seat-allocation process; a JEE Main score alone is not an IIT seat offer. Other universities may use their own or state admission systems.
JEE Main and the next admission steps
Separate the examination from seat allocation
The JoSAA official portal publishes the joint seat-allocation rules and also links separate institute admission channels, including an Olympiad route. Those routes have their own conditions: do not assume a special channel is available at every IIT or for every programme.
For a JEE-based shortlist, record four separate items: qualifying examination, permitted programme, counselling registration and reporting requirement. Passing an examination is not the same as accepting an allocated seat. Read the IIT Delhi profile for a named institution example and compare the curriculum before choosing a branch. The 2026 JoSAA schedule is a past-cycle reference, not a 2027 application window.
Try the subject before choosing it
Try a small project before committing: write and debug a simple program, model an everyday mechanism, or investigate how a local structure works. Record which part you enjoy: abstract reasoning, building, testing or documenting.
Questions that make a useful shortlist
- Which compulsory modules appear in semesters one and two? Can I see a recent laboratory timetable?
- Are electives genuinely offered every year, and what prerequisites restrict access?
- Which student projects can I inspect? Who supervises them and who pays for materials?
- Does the placement report separate my branch, graduating cohort and students actually placed?
Compare the total cost
Include a suitable computer if required, software, workshop materials, project travel and accommodation. Ask whether laboratory deposits are refundable.
Study and career fit
Software, manufacturing, infrastructure and research involve different preparation. A branch name does not guarantee a particular job. Check internship access, projects and any postgraduate requirements for the role you want.
Build your next step
- Inspect a researched college profile and follow its programme and admission sources.
- Browse the current college collection; the initial collection is selective, not an all-India ranking.
- Use the detailed college-selection checklist to record the same evidence for each option.
- Return to the course index if another subject fits better.
