SSC CGL syllabus 2026: prepare the four Tier I subjects, Tier II Paper I including Computer Knowledge and DEST, and any additional paper required for your target post. SSC publishes an indicative syllabus; it does not guarantee chapter-wise question counts.
Syllabus and paper map
| Stage / paper | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Tier I | Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension |
| Tier II Paper I | Maths, Reasoning, English, General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and DEST |
| Tier II Paper II | Statistics — shortlisted JSO / Statistical Investigator candidates |
| Tier II Paper III | Finance and Economics — shortlisted Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer candidates |
Tier I: General Intelligence and Reasoning
The indicative list includes verbal/non-verbal analogies, classification, number and figural series, coding/decoding, spatial visualization, relationship concepts, arithmetic reasoning, Venn diagrams, syllogisms, statement conclusions, embedded figures and pattern folding/unfolding. It also names critical thinking, emotional intelligence and social intelligence.
Tier I: Quantitative Aptitude
Cover number operations, decimals/fractions, percentages, ratio/proportion, square roots, averages, interest, profit/loss, discount, partnership, mixture/alligation, time/work and time/distance. The list also includes algebra and surds, linear-equation graphs, triangles/circles, mensuration, trigonometric ratios and identities, heights/distances, and statistical charts.
The notification sets the Quantitative Aptitude standard at Class 10 level; the other named Tier I parts are commensurate with graduation. Do not mistake the standard description for a guarantee that only easy questions will appear.
Tier I: English and General Awareness
English tests correct usage, basic comprehension and writing ability. General Awareness includes current events, everyday scientific observation and India/neighbouring countries, especially history, culture, geography, the economic scene, general policy and scientific research. SSC does not specify a guaranteed monthly current-affairs window.
Tier II Paper I: scoring subjects
| Subject | Main areas |
|---|---|
| Mathematical Abilities | Number systems; arithmetic; algebra; geometry; mensuration; trigonometry; graphs; mean, median, mode, standard deviation; simple probability |
| Reasoning | Verbal/non-verbal analogies, classification, series, spatial and figural tasks, Venn diagrams, inferences, coding, critical thinking and problem solving |
| English | Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, errors, blanks, synonyms/antonyms, spelling, idioms, one-word substitution, sentence improvement, voice, narration, sentence ordering, cloze and comprehension |
| General Awareness | Current events and the history, culture, geography, economy, general policy and scientific research areas named in the notice |
Computer Knowledge and DEST
Computer topics cover organization, CPU, input/output devices, memory, backup devices, ports, Windows Explorer and shortcuts; Windows and basic Word, Excel and PowerPoint; web browsing/search, downloads/uploads, email and e-banking; networking devices/protocols, threats and preventive measures.
DEST is a separate skill task, ordinarily about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes. Computer Knowledge and DEST are qualifying, with higher standards for specified posts and restricted exemption rules. Their qualifying status does not make them optional.
Paper II: Statistics
The list covers data collection/classification/presentation; central tendency and dispersion; moments, skewness and kurtosis; correlation/regression; probability; random variables and distributions; sampling; statistical inference and hypothesis tests; analysis of variance; time series; and index numbers. It is the post-specific Statistics paper, not merely the basic probability component of Paper I.
Paper III: Finance and Economics
For shortlisted Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer candidates, Part A covers Finance and Accounts for 80 marks; Part B covers Economics and Governance for 120 marks. The prescribed level is graduation.
Finance and Accounts includes accounting principles/conventions, single and double entry, journals/ledgers, bank reconciliation, trial balance and error correction, financial statements, capital versus revenue expenditure, depreciation, inventories, non-profit accounts, bills of exchange and self-balancing ledgers.
Economics and Governance covers the CAG and Finance Commission, microeconomics, demand/supply and consumer behaviour, production/cost, market structures and price determination, the Indian economy and national income, population, poverty/unemployment, infrastructure, economic reforms, money/banking, monetary/fiscal policy, budget deficits, balance of payments, FRBM and information technology in governance.
A practical preparation sequence
Editorial advice: map the official topics to strong, weak and unstudied areas; repair fundamentals; then practise timed sections and review mistakes. Build computer and data-entry practice into the week. Add the specialist paper if required for your posts. Use the current timing tables rather than the timing printed on an old question paper.
Frequently asked questions
Is Computer Knowledge part of Tier I?
No. It is in Tier II Paper I.
Does every candidate prepare Statistics?
Paper II applies to the specified shortlisted statistical posts; Paper I has its own basic statistics/probability topics.
Does SSC prescribe fixed chapter weightage?
The notification gives an indicative syllabus and section scheme, not a guaranteed chapter-wise distribution.
