SSC JE exam pattern 2026: both papers are objective computer-based examinations. Paper I is qualifying for shortlisting; only normalized Paper II scores determine final merit under paragraph 13.16, subject to other selection requirements. Do not add Paper I marks to final merit using an older-cycle assumption.
Paper I and Paper II at a glance
| Paper | Questions / marks | Duration | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Reasoning 50/50 + General Awareness 50/50 + opted subject 100/100 = 200 questions / 200 marks | 2 hours | Qualifying for shortlisting to Paper II |
| Paper II | Opted subject: 100 questions / 300 marks | 2 hours | Normalized Paper II scores determine final merit, subject to selection conditions |
The table provides 2 hours 40 minutes for candidates eligible under paragraphs 9.1–9.3. That compensatory time is conditional, not available to every candidate.
Choose the correct technical subject
| Part | Post route | Subject |
|---|---|---|
| A | JE Civil | Civil and Structural Engineering |
| B | JE Electrical | Electrical Engineering |
| C | JE Mechanical | Mechanical Engineering |
| D / E / F | Scientific Assistant, IMD | One opted subject: Computer Science/IT, Electronics/Telecommunication, or Physics |
| G | JE Telecom | Telecommunication |
Reasoning and General Awareness are compulsory in Paper I. IMD candidates choose one of D/E/F according to the stream entered in the application. JE Telecom Part G is conducted in a separate batch. Candidates eligible and applied for more than one post must appear in the respective opted papers.
The notice says the subject/stream chosen according to the qualification cannot be changed. Do not assume you may switch branches after receiving an admission certificate.
Negative marking and language
Paper I deducts 0.25 marks per wrong answer; Paper II deducts 1 mark. Questions are objective multiple choice and set in Hindi and English. Paper II is not a descriptive pen-and-paper engineering test under this notice.
Calculator and reference tables
The notification provides a scientific calculator on the computer screen for the examination. The IS 456:2000 code table and steam table, if required, are available through the candidate console. Physical versions of the calculator and tables are not allowed inside the examination lab.
Shortlisting, normalization and answer keys
Separate shortlisting merit lists are drawn for Civil, Electrical & Mechanical, Scientific Assistant in IMD and Telecom. SSC’s normalization provisions apply as described in the notice, including the relevant subject/shift treatment. Paper I qualifying status still requires meeting the actual shortlisting standard; minimum qualifying marks alone do not guarantee a place in Paper II.
The notice provides online answer-key challenges during SSC’s notified period at ₹50 per question, non-refundable. Use the release notice for the actual objection window. No current-cycle cut-off or result date is inferred here.
Preparation implications
Editorial advice: allocate time to Reasoning and General Awareness for Paper I shortlisting, while building deeper technical accuracy for Paper II. Practise the on-screen calculator and current objective format. Keep old paper years visible and do not reuse their scoring/merit instructions as current rules.
