Design & media: Courses, Admission Routes & College Choices

At a glance

Look at what you want to make: products, clothing, interfaces, visual communication or stories. Design and media courses differ in studio time, technical work and assessment. A strong shortlist starts with student work and curriculum, not attractive campus photographs.

Which course route fits your interest?

Course familyWhat to investigateDecision to make
BDesDesign practice in a specified specialisationCompare studio projects, research methods, making and critique.
BFTechFashion technology and apparel-production studyRead its eligibility and curriculum separately from BDes.
Media / communication degreesCommunication theory or production, depending on courseCheck whether the course emphasises journalism, film, advertising or another practice.

Course names are a starting point. Read the awarding university’s current programme regulations for duration, exits, entry subjects and the final qualification. Similar names do not guarantee identical curricula.

How admission works

NIFT and UCEED are different entrance routes. NIFT New Delhi lists BDes specialisations and BFTech Apparel Production. UCEED admission eligibility can vary by participating institution and school subjects. Media courses can use other university-specific routes.

Compare the UCEED route

UCEED 2027: registration and admission are separate

The official UCEED 2027 announcement lists regular-fee registration from 1–31 October 2026 and the examination on 17 January 2027. It separately lists BDes applications beginning on 15 March 2027 for qualified candidates. Registering for the examination does not submit that later admission application.

The announcement allows eligible Class XII candidates from any stream to take UCEED, but programme admission conditions still need checking for the chosen institute. Compare the IIT Delhi BDes route with NIFT New Delhi; do not use one test’s application form or eligibility rules for the other.

Try the subject before choosing it

Create a small design response to a real problem: document users, sketch alternatives, build a rough prototype and explain a revision. For media, produce a short reported story with clear sourcing. Enjoying the process matters more than polished equipment.

Questions that make a useful shortlist

  • Can I see final-year work and the assessment brief behind it?
  • How much supervised studio, workshop or production time is scheduled?
  • Which tools are available, and what must I buy myself?
  • Who owns student work, and can it be used in a public portfolio?

Compare the total cost

Add materials, printing, portfolio production, software, equipment access and project travel to tuition and housing. Ask how often students pay for exhibitions or external production.

Study and career fit

A portfolio can be central to creative work, but its value depends on the projects and your contribution. Compare internship support and alumni work without assuming every student reaches the same employer.
